About the Film
The South Carolina sea islands are a group of islands located along the coast between Georgetown and Beaufort. Their inhabitants are a complex group of people, the oldest being blacks whose ancestors came from Africa via the Caribbean and whites whose ancestry can be traced to the original land grantees of King George. The island people have maintained themselves in close yet somehow distant proximity to the grandness of Charleston. Because of the changes taking place on the islands, the human ecology which has developed with the natural ecology over the years is now in a delicate state of balance. Most of the blacks speak a dialect called Gullah which exhibits the African and Caribbean influences. No attempt has been made to translate so that the uniqueness and sound quality of the dialect could be given full play.
