Other Side of Eden: The unequal sexual relations between the races in the Jim Crow South
Rev Lindsay Green (1938 - 2000) was the pastor of Mt. Morris Baptist church. Founded shortly after the end of the Civil War, Mt. Morris Church is one of the oldest African American Churches in Fauquier County and in all of Virginia. Rev. Green comments on why African American women in Virginia sometimes entered into relationships with white men from the landowner, gentry class.
Rev Green's grandfather was a white man of considerable property. This man, Benjamin Franklin Sedwick, never acknowledged any of the children of his common-law marriage to a black woman, and he willed all his property to his white grand nephew.
Rev Green's own father was Wilbert Green was one of the most successful and respected members of the African American community in Fauquier County, Virginia. He owned and operated a country store in Hume.
