I have made two other videos involving the preservation of disappearing textile techniques. All that exists of these are: they are on youtube under Joyce Ronald Smith.
"White Fur Clouds" Which presents a Slavey Dene Woman in the NWT in Canada making garments from strips of the Snowshoe Hare.
"Taaniko Weaving, A Maori Weaving Technique" from New Zealand. As in the Hmong video I use an over voice of a person of the nationality presented in the video..
I do not use actors. I also always use music from the group I am working with....no violins.
I was born in 1930 in Mitchell South Dakota on April 9. After High School I got degrees in art and art history from the Univ of Kansas and also studied in Hamburg Germany in the late 50s. Did Textile Design in new York City with an agent, taught at the University of Missouri and The Rhode island school of Design.
In 1975 published "Taaniko, Maori Hamndweaving", Scribners.
1980-1990 was employed by the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, Brown University in the textile department. At this time I felt that video was much better at describing textile techniques rather then using drawn diagrams in a book. I never studied video or film..just did it...Have not done any more video work since the Hmong video and have not kept up with technology.
From that time until now I made wall pieces using the Taaniko technique as corporate art using an agent..
