The Rhumba Boogie of Uganda (2018)

About the Film

For over fifty years, Alfred “Uganda” Roberts has played in the clubs of New Orleans and on the records with Professor Longhair, the Meters, The Wild Magnolias, James Booker, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, and many others. As one of the creators of the rhythms that made New Orleans music what it is today, Mr. Roberts offers a living history of a music city like no other. Now 75 years-old, Uganda is one of the few musicians carrying out the tradition of hand drumming in New Orleans, and one of the few keeping the rhumba boogie style of Professor Longhair alive and well. On a side note, Mr. Roberts was one of the first African American bus drivers in New Orleans. The film includes interviews with Mr. Roberts, performances with Widespread Panic keyboardist John Hermann, and a journey in the heart of Tremé, along with rare photographs and video footage.
