Mick Newnham washes film in a bucket -- a practice that is not uncommon in emergency situations or in cases were no film washing facilities are available. He rewinds the tangled film by hand, twisting it to take out the tangles. The emulsion, being wet, is soft and can be damaged. Mick shows how slippery the wet film can be on a core. In the process, he comments on the importance of the sense of touch and hearing in handling film. This demonstration was part of a disaster recovery workshop sponsored by the Association of Moving Image Archivists in Rochester, NY 2007. |
