Filmmakers

Jonathan Asbell Mednick (March 20, 1958–June 7, 2001) was an award-winning documentary filmmaker and film educator. A native of Baltimore and a 1980 graduate of Haverford College, he received an MFA from Temple University and taught filmmaking at Wesleyan University, New York University, the University of Iowa, Antioch College, and the University of Central Florida. In the early 1990s he co-founded Other Pictures, Inc. with several of his former students.

Mednick directed They Live in Guinea (1996), a portrait of the fiercely independent watermen and women of Guinea Neck on Virginia's Chesapeake Bay. He later worked as a producer and director on the Emmy Award-winning documentary series American High, where he taught students to make the personal video diaries that became a central part of the series. Mednick died suddenly of a brain aneurysm in New York in 2001 at the age of 43.
